Banned Boys & Girls Club volunteer sentenced to prison for sex assault

A Kauai Circuit judge has sentenced a former Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii volunteer to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a girl and attempting to sexually assault another child.

Judge Kathleen Watanabe on Wednesday sentenced Eirik James Stevens of Lihue to 10 years in prison after he was convicted of second-degree sexual assault involving a 7-year-old girl. Stevens also was sentenced to five years in prison, with credit for time served, for third-degree attempted sexual assault involving an 8-year-old girl.

Watanabe ordered both terms to be served consecutively. Stevens also must register as a sex offender.

The Hawaii Paroling Authority will determine the minimum number of years he must serve in prison before he becomes eligible for parole.

The assault involving the 7-year-old girl occurred at his apartment in March 2016. The attempted sexual assault involving the 8-year-old girl occurred sometime between February and March of that year.

Both victims were described as members of the Boys & Girls Club at the time Stevens worked as a volunteer for the organization’s Lihue Clubhouse. The non-profit organization has barred him from volunteering.
