Maui police temporarily placed Lokelani Intermediate School on lockdown Friday afternoon after receiving reports of a man holding a rifle next to a Toyota sedan parked at the school.

Police arrived and detained a 45-year-old man who matched the description of the suspect and identified by a witness.

The officers searched his vehicle and found an air rifle in the trunk.

The man said that he was picking up his daughter and moved the air rifle to the back seat in order to make room for her.

Police reopened the school at 2:45 p.m. and parents were allowed to pick up their children.

The man was warned and reprimanded for his actions and was released at the scene.
