Health department issues brown water advisory for Hanalei Bay

The state health department issued a brown water advisory for Hanalei Bay on Kauai this morning due to heavy rains.

The latest advisory is in addition to others still in effect, including Maui, the Big Island, the east coast of Kauai and all of Oahu, except for the stretch between Kailua Beach Park to Hanauma Bay, due to heavy rains.

The public is advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals and associated flood debris.

“If the water is brown, stay out and continue to practice good personal hygiene,” said the advisory. “Follow up with your primary care physician if you have any health concerns.”

Current warnings, advisories and updates are posted online by the department’s clean water branch.
