Ocean Safety personnel rescued 10 people, including a 64-year-old surfer, and took thousands of preventive actions as high surf pounded the north and west shores of Oahu on Saturday.
Around 7:45 a.m., lifeguards and area surfers assisted an unresponsive man who had been surfing off Makaha Beach Park.
The man was brought to shore, given CPR and transferred to the care of Emergency Medical Services, who transported the man to an emergency room in critical condition.
Lifeguards on the North Shore took about 1,300 preventative actions Saturday. Another 1,400 preventive actions were taken along the west side of the island.
Fires extinguished in Ewa Beach, Waikele
Fire crews put out two blazes that broke out at about the same time Friday.
Investigators determined that a two-alarm building fire in Ewa Beach originated from a clothes dryer.
The fire at a multiple-family townhouse on Makaalo Street was first reported at 4:51 p.m.
The Honolulu Fire Department dispatched nine units with 31 personnel.
The fire, on the first floor of a corner unit, was brought under control by 5:02 p.m. and extinguished by 5:12 p.m.
The fire was contained to a laundry room in the unit. The occupant was not home and all other residents of the townhouse were able to evacuate without injury.
A woman was evaluated at the scene and transported for treatment of an unrelated medical condition. No damage estimates were available.
In Waikele, firefighters extinguished a car fire in an enclosed garage on Alelo Street before it could spread to the attached home.
Eight HFD units with 30 personnel responded to the 4:57 p.m. call, according to an HFD report.
The fire was brought under control at 5:05 p.m. and extinguished by 5:19 p.m.
An investigation confirmed that the fire began when the owner attempted to start the vehicle. The vehicle was heavily damaged but the structure suffered only moderate smoke and heat damage.
