Winham keeps Seabury Hall’s state dominance rolling

Seabury Hall’s girls team had another dominant performance at Saturday’s Honolulu Marathon/HHSAA State Cross Country Championships held at Island School on Kauai.

Veronica Winham defended her girls individual title, finishing the 5-kilometer course in 19 minutes, 16.10 seconds. The senior was one of three Seabury runners to finish in the top five and the team’s scoring five all finished in the top 20. The last girl to win consecutive titles was Seabury’s Dakota Grossman, who won four from 2010 to 2013.

Darby Mulligan was fourth in 20:06.21, Kallalei Ryden was fifth in 20:08.07, Chloe Gangnath was 13th in 20:32.54 and Erika Preseault placed 20th in 20:56.72. Seabury finished with a meet-low 23 points and was awarded the Division II state title for the sixth straight year based on the team’s classification. The Spartans had a meet-low 17 points at last year’s state meet at Hawaii Prep.

Punahou, which totaled 19 points, won the Division I title for the sixth straight year. The Buffanblu have won all but one state championship since 2005. Only one race was held and runners were filtered into their respective divisions for team scoring.

Maiya Fujiwara placed 10th for the Buffanblu in 20:23.92, followed by Mel Lum (11th, 20:25.20), Georgi Brady (12th, 20:28.32), Kayla Almeida (15th, 20:33.90) and Kaila Ronquilio (21st, 21:01.05).

Hawaii Baptist’s Johanna Seng finished second in 19:47.37 and St. Andrew’s Jordan Jones was third in 20:02.24. ‘Iolani (51 points) and Hawaii Baptist (46) claimed the runner-up trophies in Division I and II.

‘Iolani won its third consecutive boys team title after its scoring five finished in the top 21. The Raiders finished with a meet-low 39 points. Maui was second with 97 points.

Jason Wang and Nicholas Arima were third and fifth to lead the Raiders. Both clocked in at 16:51.52. Bailey Koen was 12th in 17:20.94, Joshua Lerner placed 19th in 17:35.92 and Wolfgang Sakamaki was 21st in 17:37.06.

Kalaheo’s Colby Otero won the boys race in 16:21.91. Castle’s Hudson Lockette was second in 16:44.74. Hawaii Baptist edged Hawaii Prep 42-49 to win the boys D-II title.
