Interim HPD chief announces retirement
The mayor thanked Cary Okimoto, who retires tomorrow, for his service as the interim police chief.
“On behalf of the City and County of Honolulu, I offer my warmest regards to acting Chief Cary Okimoto, who announced today that he will be retiring from the Honolulu Police Department at the end of the month,” said acting Mayor Roy K. Amemiya Jr. in a statement. “We thank him for his 33 years of dedicated service, and for his excellent leadership as acting Chief of Police over the past several months. While we are sad to see him go, we are grateful for the work he and his fellow officers have done to make Honolulu one of the safest big cities in the nation. We wish him and his family the very best.”
Okimoto, who joined the Honolulu Police Department in 1984, was deputy chief in December when then-Chief Louis Kealoha placed himself on paid voluntary and then retired in February. The city’s Police Commission selected Maj. Susan Ballard as the new police chief.
