Strong earthquake strikes off Loyalty Islands; no tsunami threat to Hawaii

A strong earthquake struck off the Loyalty Islands in the South Pacific today but doesn’t pose a tsunami threat for Hawaii.

The magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck at around 2:42 p.m. Hawaii time about 78 miles east-southeast of Tadine, New Caledonia, at a depth of about 10 feet, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of injury or damages.

“Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” according to a statement from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on Oahu.
