Ho wins WQS surf contest in France

Hawaii’s Coco Ho won the 2017 White Horse Women’s Pro in pumping waves at Maruki Point in Chiba City, Japan, today.

In the final of the World Surf League’s qualifying series contest, Ho came from behind to beat Bianca Buitendag of South Africa 13.97 to 11.10,

Ho, who also surfs on the WSL championship tour, moved up to second on the qualifying series leaderboard and is close to a lock at requalifying for the championship tour.

HIC Pro is underway at Sunset Beach

Hawaii’s Barron Mamiya, Cody Young and Kiron Jabour were among the 11 surfers to win their round-of-96 heats after making it through the round of 112 in the first day of the HIC Pro at Sunset Beach on Sunday. The World Surf League world qualifying men’s series contest will continue today, waves permitting.

Notre Dame de Namur tops Hawaii Pacific

Bianca Alvarez had 15 kills to lead Notre Dame de Namur to a 25-20, 25-15, 25-18 women’s volleyball victory over Hawaii Pacific on Sunday at the Castle High gym.

Rowan Jack added 11 kills for the Argonauts (13-10, 8-7 Pacific West Conference).

Cameryn Collie pounded 16 kills for the Sharks (7-15, 5-9).

Standhardinger goes No. 1 in PBA draft

Christian Standhardinger, a former University of Hawaii standout, was selected No. 1 overall by the San Miguel Beermen at the Philippine Basketball Association draft, held Sunday in Manila.

Standhardinger, a 6-foot-7 forward, led the Rainbow Warriors in scoring in his two seasons with the team (2012-13, 2013-14). The 28-year-old Standhardinger, who is from Munich and has a Filipino mother, played professionally in Germany after his UH career. Standhardinger played well in three tournaments for the Philippines national team over the summer as the squad’s naturalized player. He currently is under contract with the Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions of the ASEAN Basketball League. The PBA and ASEAN seasons overlap, so Standhardinger may not be able to play for San Miguel until midseason. San Miguel acquired the No. 1 overall pick from KIA Picanto a week prior to the draft in exchange for three players and a 2019 first-round draft pick.

UH splits swim meet in California

The Hawaii swimming and diving team defeated UC Santa Barbara 138-124 and lost 141-112 to UCLA on Sunday.

Leading the way for the Rainbow Wahine was Franziska Weidner, who took home victories in the 200 IM (2:01.98), 100 back (55.81) and 100 free (50.36), while teammate Phoebe Hines placed first in the 500 free (4:56.65) and 1,000 free (10:09.64).

The UH divers were led by Madison Sthamann’s second-place finish with a personal-best 314.83 on the 3-meter board. She, along with teammate Ivy Houser, had high enough scores to receive NCAA Zone qualification.

Rainbow Wahine sailors take fourth

The UH Rainbow Wahine sailing team finished the fall schedule by taking fourth place at the PCSCC Fall Championship over the weekend in Redwood City, Calif.

UH totaled 196 points — 80 in the A division and 116 in the B division.

Next up for the Rainbow Wahine is the spring season, which begins with the Peter Wenner Rainbow Wahine Invitational at Keehi Lagoon, Jan. 20-21.

Moanalua wins OIA cheer championship

Moanalua scored 521 points to win the Oahu Interscholastic Association cheerleading championship for the third year in a row Saturday at Na Menehune’s home gym.

Mililani placed second with 517.75 points, followed by Kaiser with 488.25.
