Hawaii island police Tuesday asked for the public’s help in tracking down two men who were caught on surveillance video stealing U.S. and Hawaiian flags from the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel in Hilo.
A man in a gray shirt stole the U.S. flag, and a man in a black T-shirt and black hat took the Hawaiian flag. Police provided no time or date when the flags were removed.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Police Department’s nonemergency number at 935-3311 or Lt. Robert Almeida at 961-2213.
Man released pending investigation in Puna shooting
Hawaii island police released a man who was arrested Sunday on suspicion of shooting a 24-year-old Puna man who lives in the same residence, but continue to investigate the case as second-degree attempted murder.
Police responded Sunday afternoon to a home on North Road in Mountain View and found a 24-year-old man who had been shot in the head. Police recovered a firearm at the scene.
The man was taken by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center and later flown to Oahu in critical condition, police said.
At 2:45 p.m. police arrested Mahdi Hemmat, 28. They later released him.
