A new simulation lab at Kauai’s Wilcox Medical Center features high-tech training dummies to be used as educational tools for nurses.
The new lab was opened for tours after a blessing this week.
“This lab and the technology within it will enhance our nurse education and training program and allow our nurses to experience the most complex medical situations so they can be prepared for it if and when it actually happens,” Jen H. Chahanovich, president and CEO of Wilcox Medical Center and CEO of Kauai Medical Clinic, said in a news release.
Wilcox is the designated trauma center for the island, and the hospital said the lab will allow training for situations like high-risk and complicated births that staff may not regularly experience.
The lab is equipped with five training dummies, including a child, a man and a woman known as SimMom that simulates various birthing situations and includes a simulated newborn. A newborn warmer available in the lab will also allow staff to practice newborn care and resuscitation.
In addition to the training dummies, the lab also features a classroom and computer workstations.
