Two state senators plan a town hall meeting in Kapolei on Monday to discuss the North Korean nuclear missile threat.
Hawaii Emergency Management Agency officials will discuss what they are doing to prepare the state for the threat and to educate the community.
State Sens. Will Espero (D, Ewa Beach-Iroquois Point) and Mike Gabbard (D, Kapolei-Makakilo) are hosting the meeting at Kapolei High School cafeteria, 91-5007 Kapolei Parkway, at 6:30 p.m.
Senate to hold session for judicial nominations
A special session of the state Senate is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday to confirm four judicial nominees, three for the Circuit Court and one for the District Family Court in Honolulu.
On Wednesday the Senate received three letters of appointment from Gov. David Ige naming Paul B.K. Wong, Matthew J. Viola and Rowena A. Somerville to serve as circuit judges. The Senate also received a letter of appointment from Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald naming Jessi L.K. Hall to serve as a Family Court judge.
The appointees were chosen by Ige and Recktenwald from a list of candidates submitted by the Judicial Selection Commission.
The Senate has 30 days to consent to the appointments.
The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the appointments at 10 a.m. Monday in Conference Room 16.
The Senate will convene at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Information and hearing notices can be viewed on the Legislature’s website, capitol.hawaii.gov.
Souki set to become in-house attorney for UH
Jesse Souki, the outgoing executive director of the state agency regulating development in Kakaako, is in line to become an in-house attorney for the University of Hawaii.
Souki notified the Hawaii Community Development Authority on Nov. 1 that he was resigning effective Dec. 1 after 12 months on the job, but did not give a reason.
According to an agenda notice for a UH Board of Regents meeting Thursday, Souki is joining UH as an associate general counsel starting Dec. 1. His monthly salary of $11,460 and his position were disclosed for public comment.
Souki’s annual salary at HCDA was $130,000. That compares with $137,520 for the UH job.
