Junior forward Erik Scheive posted 19 points to lead the Chaminade men’s basketball team to a 71-58 win over Alaska on Friday in the first round of the Alaska/Hawaii Challenge in Anchorage, Alaska.
Justin Bridges added 13 points for the Silverswords (1-0). Davis Kimble led the Nanooks (0-1) with a game-high 23 points and six rebounds.

HPU women’s hoops fall short to Alaska
The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team cut a 21-point deficit to three points with three minutes remaining, but No. 4 Alaska Anchorage fended off the Sharks for an 82-74 victory on Friday at Central Washington’s Wildcat Crossover Classic in Ellensburg, Wash.
HPU’s Janessa Manzano scored a game-high 24 points in the Sharks’ season opener, and Samantha Lambrigtsen added 20 points.
Hannah Wandersee led the Seawolves (2-0) with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Lexi Carpenter poured in a team-high 12 points for the Nanooks (0-1).
Vulcans lose to Concordia in 3
The Hawaii Hilo women’s volleyball squad was swept by Concordia 25-7, 25-23, 25-21 in its final conference road game of the season on Friday in Irvine, Calif.
The Vulcans had just 18 kills in the loss to fall to 8-17 overall, 5-13 in PacWest play. UHH senior Siera Green finished with a team-high five kills, while junior Basia Sauni had 12 digs.
The Eagles (16-9 overall, 12-6 PacWest) are ranked No. 10 in the West region. Rachel Flynn led Concordia with 14 kills.
UH cross country finishes last in West
The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine cross country team finished 36th with a combined score of 1,126 points at the NCAA West Regional Championship on Friday in Seattle. Freshman Sienna Santiago led UH with a time of 23 minutes and 37.4 seconds in the 6K race, finishing in 214th place.
San Francisco clinched the top spot with an average time of 19:45.
