High surf expected around the state starting today

The National Weather Service has issued a high-surf warning and high-surf advisory for parts of the state beginning this morning.

An incoming north swell will arrive as early as sunrise and move down the island chain before peaking late tonight or early Monday, the weather service said.

The high-surf warning was scheduled to take effect at 6 a.m. today and last until 6 p.m. Monday for north-facing shores of Niihau and Kauai. Surf was forecast to reach 20 to 25 feet along those shores.

The weather service warned beachgoers about water sweeping across portions of beaches, strong breaking waves and powerful rip currents.

Meanwhile, a high-surf advisory was scheduled to take effect from 6 a.m. today to 6 p.m. Monday for north-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island. Surf was expected to reach 18 to 22 feet along the north shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui, and 12 to 18 feet along Hawaii island’s north shore, the weather service said.

Surf will reach advisory levels in the morning for the smaller islands and by midday for Hawaii island, the weather service said.

Winds of 11 to 23 mph were expected with seas of 8 to 13 feet.
