Epic. Saturday was truly one for the ages in the annals of high school championship football here.
The first title match went into seven overtimes, the second was won by a team battling back from a 13-point deficit, and the night’s finale came down to a 53-yard touchdown pass in the final 37 seconds.
Kudos to all the players and coaches who showed such competitive spirit and sportsmanship in Saturday’s trio of First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships: Division II champ Lahainaluna, which eked out the 75-69 win over Konawaena after seven OTs; Division I champ Hilo, which came back for the 35-19 win over Damien; and last but hardly least, State Open Division champ Saint Louis, which edged out arch-rival Kahuku, 31-28, in a literal last-minute thriller.
