Hawaii island firefighters have suspended their search today for a male reported missing after he was last seen Saturday swimming in a pond along Wailuku River above Rainbow Falls.

The Hawaii County Fire Department suspended their search just after 10 a.m. due to flash flooding and heavy rain.

Firefighters plan to resume their search for the missing swimmer Tuesday morning, weather and river conditions permitting.

At about 12:40 p.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to a report of a male and female having difficulty swimming in a pond about 100 yards above the falls. Witnesses saw the two go underwater. Both failed to resurface.

Firefighters found the female unconscious in the water below the falls. She was transported to Hilo Medical Center where she later died. Positive identification is pending.
