The Lihue town post office is closing, the U.S. Postal Service announced Friday.
The agency said it will proceed with the proposal to relocate its postal services from the post Office at 4441 Rice St. to its carrier annex at 3230 Kapule Highway.
In a statement by email, the Postal Service said it has “determined that the relocation is the optimal solution to satisfy its need to improve operational efficiency and reduce the financial burdens facing the organization,” adding, “The relocation will allow the Lihue Post office to consolidate its delivery and retail operations, which are currently split between the two facilities.“
The Postal Service considered the concerns about the relocation proposal expressed at community meetings in Lihue on Feb. 23 and Oct. 11 and in appeals and comments received before and after the meetings.
Retail services on Rice Street will continue uninterrupted until the new facility is operational.
