Hawaii pro surfer John Florence accepts the first place award in this year’s Surfer Poll Awards during ceremonies at Turtle Bay Resort on Wednesday.

Hawaii surfers John Florence and Carissa Moore repeated as this year’s top vote-getters in the annual Surfer Awards, held Wednesday at Turtle Bay Resort.

As Florence prepares to defend his first place finish in the 2017 Billabong Pipe Masters — the contest’s holding period resumes Friday — he returned to Turtle Bay with many of the sport’s top surfers and surf filmmakers to honor the most creative content produced over the last 12 months.

He was joined at the top of the Men’s Surfer Poll by repeat second-place finisher Kelly Slater and Jordy Smith, who came in third after finishing sixth last year; Portugal native Frederico Morais and California surfer Dane Reynolds finished in fourth and fifth places, respectively.

On the women’s side, Moore was followed this year by Alana Blanchard, who finished in fifth place in 2016. Stephanie Gilmore repeated for the second year in third, with Sally Fitzgibbons and Tyler Wright rounding out the top five.

Additional awards were handed out for Best Barrel (Ian Walsh at Jaws on Maui), Best Series (“Continuance” featuring Kelly Slater), Best Maneuver (Albee Layer) and Heavy Water (Kai Lenny). The North Shore Lifeguard Association was also honored this year with Surfer’s Agent of Change Award.
