Council OKs measures trying to rein in ‘monster’ homes

    Kaimuki resident Donna Shimabuku stood at the back of a three story addition built to a family home located at 4174 Koko Drive. The addition extends all the way back to Ekaha Ave. where she is pictured. Shimabuku’s family has lived in the area for over 70 years and hopes that the construction of such “monster” homes are brought to halt in the neighborhood.

The Honolulu City Council approved legislation Wednesday that directs the Department of Planning and Permitting to come up with stiffer regulations on large-scale houses and renewed an effort to impose a moratorium on building permits for such structures until new rules are in place. Read more
