Temperatures dipped to a record low of 59 degrees at Lihue Airport on Kauai early Friday, while those in Kahului matched a record low of 58 degrees.
The record low of 59 degrees was recorded at 2:53 a.m. at Lihue Airport, while the matching low of 58 degrees was recorded at 4:54 a.m. in Kahului, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Gavin Shigesato. The previous low for Lihue was 60 degrees, set 32 years ago in 1985.
Temperatures are expected to dip below 70 degrees again early this morning and Sunday around the state. There is a 40 percent chance of rain for Sunday morning’s Honolulu Marathon, Shigesato said.
Due to high surf, the Hawaii County Civil Defense agency said Onekahakaha Beach Park will remain closed through the weekend. Kealoha, Wailena, Waiuli and Richardson’s beach parks in Keaukaha, Hilo, will open after debris cleanup is completed today.
Forecasters say a ridge of high pressure will keep winds light over the islands through today. Most areas will be rain-free, but there will be clouds, and possibly a few showers, focused over island interiors this afternoon.
A weak cold front will reach Kauai late today and stall across the central islands Sunday before washing out. Yet another front will move down the chain early next week.
A high-surf advisory remained in effect, with waves of 10 to 15 feet, for north-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island until 6 p.m. Friday.
