For the second consecutive year, the Gatorade Hawaii state player of the year award goes to the starting quarterback at Saint Louis.
Senior Chevan Cordeiro, who accounted for 3,586 yards and 39 touchdowns in 10 games this season, was given the honor Monday after leading the Crusaders to an undefeated season and state championship.
Now a finalist for the national player of the year award to be announced later this month, Cordeiro joins an elite alumni association of state award-winners in 12 sports, including Matthew Stafford (2005-06 Highland Park High School, Texas) and Leonard Fournette (2013-14 & 2012-13, St. Augustine High School, La.).
Cordeiro is the fourth quarterback from Saint Louis to win the award since 1997, joining last year’s winner, Tua Tagovailoa; Marcus Mariota (2011) and Jason Gesser (1997, ‘98). Other winners from Saint Louis include running back Pesefea Fiaseu (2001), receiver George Ornellas (1995) and defensive tackle Vavae Tata (1994).
