UH’s Maglio earns All-American honors

STAR-ADVERTISER / SEPT. 7

Emily Maglio is the 30th Rainbow Wahine to be named to an All-American team, giving the program 58 certificates.

For the third season in a row, the Hawaii women’s volleyball squad has a player named to the 14-member second team of the AVCA All-American list.

Senior middle Emily Maglio, who led the Big West in blocking for a second consecutive year, today was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Maglio will be attending Friday’s All-America banquet in Kansas City, Mo., that is held in conjunction with the final four.

The Canadian national is the 30th Rainbow Wahine to be named to an All-American team, giving the program 58 certificates. Last year, Nikki Taylor was named to the second team for a second straight time.

Maglio also joins Taylor in another distinction. The two also earned All-American honors playing for Hawaii’s beach team.

“I was kind of shocked,” Maglio said before leaving today. “I didn’t expect to make any sort of All-American. It’s cool.

“I definitely feel I put in a lot of hard work and for this to pay off like this is pretty cool. There’s a lot of good middles in the country, some pretty tough competition. To be up there with some of the names (in the Hawaii program) like Angelica (current assistant coach Ljungqvist) is huge.”

Kahuku High graduate Adora Anae, a senior outside hitter for Utah, was named to the 14-member first team. She was a second-team selection last season.

Cal Poly’s Taylor Nelson, and sisters Adlee and Torrey Van Winden were named honorable mention. Also from the Big West was UC Santa Barbara’s Lindsey Ruddins.

Maglio had 155 total blocks, averaging a league-best 1.46 blocks per set. She also finished second in the conference with a .381 hitting percentage with 355 kills, 71 errors in 745 total attacks.

Coming into this week, Maglio was 15th nationally in blocks per set and tied for 24th in total blocks.

Last season as a junior, Maglio earned Pacific North Region honorable mention honors.

Last week, Maglio was named to the Pacific North All-Region team giving Hawaii its 84th all-region player. She was an all-region honorable mention as a junior.
