Bicyclist in fatal Hilo crash identified

Hawaii island police identified the victim of a bicycle and vehicle collision earlier this month in Hilo as Jerry Lee Wiseman, 70, of Pepeekeo.

Wiseman was fatally struck by a vehicle on Highway 19 near Hau Lane early on the morning of Dec. 6 in Hilo. Firefighters who responded found him dead on arrival. A 26-year-old male who had been driving the vehicle was transported to an area hospital due to neck pain.

From Jan. 1 to Dec. 11 this year, there were a total of six bicyclist fatalities statewide compared to none at the same time last year. In Hawaii County, there were 24 fatalities involving motor vehicle occupants, two involving pedestrians, six involving motorcycles, mopeds, scooters (and one motorized bicycle) and three bicyclists.

The total tally of traffic fatalities in Hawaii as of Dec. 11 was 101, compared to 112 at the same time last year.

Police are also asking anyone who witnessed the crash to reach officer Keith Nacis at 961-2339 or Keith.Nacis@hawaiicounty.gov. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call islandwide CrimeStoppers at 961-8300.
