Honolulu Fire Department investigators determined that the five Kailua fires that burned five houses overnight on Dec. 14 totaled an estimated $86,500 in damage.
Four of the five fires were intentionally set, HFD investigators found. The fifth fire remains under investigation, HFD said in a news release.
Residents were inside four of the homes at the time of the fires but managed to escape without major injuries, officials said.
The fires occurred between 10:51 p.m. Dec. 14 and 2:25 a.m. Dec. 15.
The Wanaao Road fire, which caused the most damage at an estimated $60,000, is the only blaze of the five that remains under investigation. Five people were home at the time. Residents pulled a woman through a window before firefighters got there. A woman was treated for smoke inhalation.
The four remaining fires:
>> The Hui Street fire caused less than $500 in damage.
>> The first fire broke out in a home’s detached garage on Nanialii Street and caused an estimated $20,000 in damage.
>> The Kawainui Street fire caused $1,000 in damage.
>> The Maluniu Avenue fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damage.
Anyone with information on any of the fires is asked to contact the Honolulu Police Department, which is pursuing arson cases.
Mountain View man indicted for child porn
A grand jury has indicted a 35-year-old Mountain View man for allegedly possessing over 960 files of child pornography.
Albert Reginald Carvalho Jr. was indicted Wednesday with two counts of promoting child abuse in the second degree for possessing videos and images of child sexual abuse on his laptop computer and cellphone.
A bench warrant has been issued for his arrest. Bail is set at $11,000.
Carvalho is accused of possessing at least 962 files of children being sexually exploited. More than half of the files involve children under age 12.
“These charges involving sexual exploitation are horrific in scale,” said state Attorney General Doug Chin in a news release. “This is abuse with a lasting negative impact on children. My office will prosecute those who engage in this destructive behavior.”
