Waianae motorcycle crash marks first Oahu traffic fatality of 2018

Oahu’s first traffic fatality of 2018 involved a motorcycle crash on Mailiili Road in Waianae Tuesday night that killed a 57-year-old Waianae rider who was speeding and not wearing a helmet, traffic investigators said.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office this morning did not immediately release the identity of the rider.

Police said the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet while riding “at a high rate of speed” on Mailiili Road just north of Paakea Road before the 11:45 p.m. crash. Investigators did not immediately know whether alcohol was involved.

The rider lost control, rode onto a grass shoulder then hit “a fixed object” before crashing into a chain-link fence, police said. He was thrown onto the road, where he died.

At the same time last year, Honolulu had no traffic fatalities.
