Hawaii’s Finn McGill won the World Surf League Jeep Junior World Championship men’s title on Wednesday at Kiama in Australia.
McGill, who was nursing an ankle injury, scored an 8.0 and an 8.90 to defeat Japan’s Joh Azuchi 16.90 to 11.0o in the event final.
“I can barely talk right now and it hasn’t really sunk in just yet,” McGill said in a news release. “After coming off an injury I wasn’t expecting too much of a result at this event. I was never feeling in much of a rhythm and seemed to just be sneaking through heats. It all changed in my quarterfinal and all of a sudden I began to build and feel the flow. Then once I was in the final, I knew I had just one more heat to surf, so I knew I just had to wait for the good ones and surf them well.”
Hawaii’s Summer Macedo lost to Tahiti’s Vahine Fierro 13.83 to 6.36 in the Jeep Junior World Championship women’s final.
