Family members of a 16-month-old girl went into the living room of their Waianae home last week after hearing what they perceived as banging sounds and found the toddler unresponsive, Deputy Prosecutor Tiffany Kaeo told a state judge Thursday.
Deputy Prosecutor Tiffany Kaeo told Circuit Judge Colette Garibaldi that the girl, who suffered life-threatening injuries, is Christian Mikaele’s daughter.
An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Thursday charging Mikaele, 38, with attempted murder. The indictment also puts Mikaele on notice that because his daughter is 8 years old or younger, the state intends to seek an extended sentence of life in prison without the possible release on parole if he is found guilty. The normal penalty for attempted second-degree murder is life in prison with the possibility of parole.
Garibaldi confirmed Mikaele’s bail at $500,000.
A city Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman said a city ambulance crew went to the Waianae home at midnight Jan. 10 and transported the girl in critical condition to the hospital.
Honolulu police say the girl was in Mikaele’s care when she suffered the injuries.
Deputy sheriff charged with assaulting inmate
A state deputy sheriff is accused of assaulting an inmate who was in custody last year for shoplifting.
The state Attorney General’s Office filed a criminal complaint in state court Wednesday charging Shaun Dydasco with two counts of misdemeanor assault. The complaint alleges that Dydasco committed both assaults April 28.
According to state court records, the alleged victim was in Honolulu District Court in downtown Honolulu that day for his arraignment on a fourth-degree theft charge. He had been arrested the day before for shoplifting at a Walmart store.
The alleged victim remained in custody until May 3, when his co-defendant in the case posted his $100 bail. He later pleaded no contest and was sentenced to the five days he had already spent in custody.
The state Department of Public Safety says Dydasco started working for the department in October 2007 and remains employed pending the outcome of all investigations.
Woman charged in armed threat on bus
A 23-year-old woman has been charged after she allegedly threatened a city bus driver with a firearm in Pearl City.
Annastasia Debibar was charged Wednesday with first-degree terroristic threatening. Her bail is set at $20,000.
On Jan. 6, police said, the suspect later identified as Debibar and the bus driver, 58, got into an argument over the bus fare.
She began yelling profanities and threatened the driver. Police said she then exited the bus, brandished a firearm and pointed it at him.
Debibar then removed a passenger’s bicycle from the bus bike rack and fled.
Police located her in Pearl City on Tuesday and arrested her.
She has a criminal record of petty misdmeanor and misdemeanor thefts and petty misdemeanor criminal trespassing.
