Texas man dies while scuba diving off Maui
The Maui Fire Department said a 57-year-old Texas man died Wednesday morning after falling unconscious while scuba diving alone in Makena along the South Maui coast.
The fire department said the man was a visitor from Montgomery, Texas. He had gone scuba diving alone about an hour earlier. A friend remained on the beach waiting for him to return.
Two freedivers spotted the man, donned in scuba gear, lying motionless on the sea floor in about 10 feet of water, the fire department said. The divers signaled to people on shore that they needed help, retrieved the man and swam him about 30 yards to shore.
Lifeguards from Makena State park arrived at 9:54 a.m. at Oneuli Beach, also known as Black Sand Beach, as beachgoers brought the man to shore.
Lifeguards administered CPR until fire rescue personnel and paramedic crews arrived a short time later.
However, rescue crews were unable to resuscitate the man, and he died at the scene. Positive identification is pending.
