Police arrested a 50-year-old man after he allegedly set fire to an abandoned home in Nanakuli.

The suspect was arrested at or near the property at 87-212 Mikana St. just before 9:50 a.m. Tuesday on suspicion of first-degree arson.

Earlier that morning, at about 3:45 a.m., firefighters responded to a three-alarm fire at the single-family home and extinguished it at 4:53 a.m. The blaze destroyed the structure and damaged neighboring homes.

Before the fire occurred, police said the suspect attempted to start a fire at an area business at about 3 a.m. Police were called but the perpetrator had already fled.

The suspect then allegedly set fire to the abandoned home on Mikana Street where he was living and also set fire to nearby brush.

Firefighters had been dispatched to the same property Monday to extinguish a small fire.

Neighbors said the suspected arsonist previously had set at least eight fires on the property. A charred vehicle fronting the structure had been set ablaze within the last couple of months.

The suspect is related to the late homeowner of the property.

In December 2011, the suspect was charged in an unprovoked attack of a 55-year-old man.

Police said he stabbed the victim several times with a knife at a Waipahu care home where the suspect resided as a client. The victim, described as the homeowner, was treated for his injuries at a hospital and released.

According to court records, the suspect was convicted of second-degree assault in the stabbing case and sentenced in 2014 to five years in prison.
