It was a disappointment, though not a surprise, that the Honolulu City Council has set rates for tour vans to bring groups of up to 15 to Waimanalo Bay Beach Park, for a day of activities. It’s still unclear why, other than its larger-than-average parking lot, the favored spot known as “Sherwood Forest” was picked as the first exception to Oahu’s current tour-bus beach ban.

Now that it is, it bears watching. The city is still in the process of setting an islandwide policy. All eyes are on this Windward test case to see if it’s manageable. The neighbors certainly are paying attention.

#MeToo movement hits close to home

Until this point, Hawaii residents largely have watched from afar as the #MeToo upheaval over sexual harassment has unfolded. Mostly those stories have played out on the national stage.

The high-profile case lodged by Rachael Wong, former head of the state Department of Human Services, against former state House Speaker Joe Souki could change all that, regardless of how this particular case resolves.

It was the testimony by celebrities and other well-known people, mostly against men in the entertainment and political realms, that broke the ice. Who knows who will speak up next?
