Meet Cherilyn Molina, the 2017 Star-Advertiser All-State guard and player of the year from Konawaena.
Now meet the ’18 update: Molina v2.0 is a party and rim crasher. The senior guard scored 16 points and crashed the glass for 11 rebounds as three-time defending champion Konawaena exploded after halftime for a 59-32 win over Moanalua on Thursday night in the quarterfinal round of the Snapple/ HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships.
With the win, Konawaena (13-0) now has won 10 games in a row at the big dance.
Senior guard Mikayla Tablit added 10 points and four steals, Tanniya Uchida had 10 points and four assists, and Caiyle Kaupu tallied nine points and five rebounds. Molina chipped in five assists and four steals as the Wildcats used man-to-man and zone defenses.
Konawaena, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will meet Lahainaluna today at 5 p.m. at Blaisdell Center.
A stoic crowd of about 400 endured major humidity in McKinley Student Council Gymnasium to see the Wildcats turn a 24-19 halftime lead into a runaway. Molina was an unexpected visitor to the boards on the offensive end. Six times, she brought down an offensive carom. Two of those hustle plays came to start the second half, sparking a 20-4 run by the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champions.
“She’s been doing that on the glass all season,” Konawaena coach Bobbie Awa said. “We had a nice second half. We actually got some transition buckets. We should’ve been doing that all along.”
In all, Konawaena grabbed 16 offensive rebounds in the first three quarters. Defensively, they forced Moanalua into 18 turnovers. They also limited Moanalua’s high-scoring center, Delylah Sanerivi, to four points on four field-goal attempts. The senior hauled in nine rebounds.
“I wish we would’ve grabbed onto the moment. We needed to dig deep and we didn’t,” Moanalua coach Tani Almont-Done said. “They couldn’t match up with us, but they had too many offensive rebounds.”
Raven Rosa-Lasco led Moanalua (11-5) with 11 points, all in the first half. Na Menehune led 5-2 early on drives to the bucket by Rosa-Lasco and Kelcie Leong, and a layup by Sanerivi.
Konawaena responded with an 8-0 run, even though Kaupu, the Wildcats’ center, had to sit with her second foul. Moanalua was within 20-16 after a drive to the basket by Rosa-Lasco, but Sanerivi, their 5-foot-10 center, sat due to foul trouble with 3:40 left in the first half.
A big spark off the bench for Konawaena was junior forward Mo‘o Mo‘o Fautanu, who hustled for four offensive rebounds in the second quarter, including one on a leap beyond the corner end line in the bleachers.
The Wildcats then dominated the third quarter as Molina scored twice on putbacks and added a layup to open the lead to 30-19. She scored eight points in all during the third, and after Tablit drove for a reverse layup before the buzzer, Konawaena led 44-23. It was fast break after fast break.
“There’s no excuse why we couldn’t get back on defense,” Almont-Done said.
Lahainaluna 38, ‘Iolani 36
The MIL champion Lunas zoomed to a 10-0 lead and hung on to oust the Raiders in quarterfinal action at McKinley. Susie Namoa had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead third-seeded Lahainaluna (15-0), which will face second-seeded Konawaena today at 5 p.m. at Blaisdell Center.
Senior Kellie Okamura paced ‘Iolani (10-5), the ILH runner-up, with 14 points.
The Raiders never led, but chipped away and got within 37-36 after Tori Maeda scored on a layup with 2:30 remaining. Lahainaluna, which went into delay mode at the start of the fourth quarter, missed two 1-and-1 opportunities before Braeanna Estabillo’s free throw made it a 38-36 game with 19.4 seconds left.
‘Iolani’s Maeda missed a left-handed layup in traffic, but Namoa was knocked off balance and called for traveling with 1.5 seconds left. Okamura took the inbounds pass and drove to the bucket, but time expired before she got her shot off.
It was a heated battle in a humid gym, a test of fullcourt pressure and two fast-breaking teams from start to finish. Lahainaluna’s biggest lead was 22-10 midway through the second quarter, and the Lunas led at the half 27-18.
