Sweep clinches tournament for No. 3 Hawaii

Junior hitter Stijn van Tilburg put down down 14 kills without an error and No. 3 Hawaii claimed the title of the inaugural Waikiki Beachcomber Classic men’s volleyball tournament with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-22 sweep of Thompson Rivers tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Warriors didn’t drop a set in winning their second tournament at home. Junior setter Joe Worsley finished with 24 assists and a team-high four blocks, including two solo, en route to being named the most outstanding player.

Dobbert had 15 kills for TRU out of the Canada West Conference. The match lasted 87 minutes and was considered an exhibition.

In the de facto third-place match early today, Peter Edwards put down 10 kills to lead Academy United of the National Volleyball Association over Lees-McRae of Conference Carolinas, 25-19, 25-17, 25-9.
