Hawaii’s Josh Moniz surfed to victory in exceptional 8- to 12-foot waves at the Volcom Pipe Pro on Sunday.

Moniz, 21, survived a final heat that included a 10-point ride from Hawaii’s Jamie O’Brien.

Moniz scored 17.56 points in the final, and O’Brien was right behind with 17.43. Wessley Dantas of Brazil took third, followed by Cam Richards of Pawleys Island, S.C.

“This is the best win of my professional career,” Moniz said. The only win that will get better is a Pipe Masters, so hopefully down the line I can do one of those.”
