Kamehameha has hired Kahi Ka’ano’i as its varsity baseball coach on an interim basis.

The school sent out a press release with a statement on Wednesday.

“We can confirm that we’ve offered interim head coaching positions for the varsity and junior varsity baseball teams,” the statement read. “Interim varsity coach Kahi Kaʻanoʻi and interim JV coach John Barrozo III will begin working with student-athletes this week.”

Ka’ano’i, a Kamehameha alum, was a seventh-round draft pick by the Kansas City Royals in the 2000 MLB Draft. He helped the Warriors win an ILH championship that year as the ace of the pitching staff.

The announcement was made 11 days after Thomas Perkins and the rest of his varsity staff, along with the entire junior varsity staff, were let go.

Kamehameha fired Perkins two days before tryouts were supposed to begin. Perkins had been on the receiving end of complaints from parents regarding various issues dating back to the beginning of last season.

The latest problem had to do with a planned trip to California in which the team had been scheduled to leave Wednesday night to play games the rest of the week. The trip was canceled after the coaching staff was fired.

The Warriors advanced to the state tournament in two of Perkins’ three seasons since he took over for Billy Pieper.
