Relatives of a 43-year-old woman who had been snorkeling at Sharks Cove found her unconscious this afternoon.
Emergency Services Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright said in an email that the woman, a visitor from Washington state, got into trouble while snorkeling.
The surf was about 2 feet high. Bystanders started CPR until lifeguards arrived just after 12:30 p.m. Friday.
Emergency Medical Services personnel took over lifesaving treatment and transported her in critical condition by ambulance to an emergency room.
The woman was wearing a full face mask.
Enright said no lifeguards are stationed at Sharks Cove, and urges the public to swim at lifeguarded beaches.
Of the four drownings on Oahu this year, three have occurred at beaches without lifeguards.

Resident pleads guilty to hitting London police
LONDON >> A tourist from Hawaii pleaded guilty Friday to punching two London police officers Wednesday outside Buckingham Palace.
A prosecutor said 36-year-old Ryan Robinson of Kaneohe asked the armed officers, “Do you know any jokes?” before punching one in the face and trying to grab his Taser.
When the second officer pointed his gun at Robinson and ordered him to stand still, Robinson knocked him to the ground, prosecutor Henry Fitch said. Robinson then pulled the two officers to their feet in “an extraordinary display of strength” and punched one of them again.
He said Robinson was heavily intoxicated and that it took several other officers to restrain and arrest him.
Robinson, who appeared in court with a dirty shirt and bruised eye, admitted two counts of assaulting a police officer.
A judge at Westminster Magistrates’ Court gave him an eight-week suspended sentence and ordered him to pay each victim $280.
