Landslide closes Kuhio Highway on Kauai

A landslide has closed Kuhio HIghway from marker 6 to the highway on Kauai.

Kuhio Highway between Wainiha and Lumahai on Kauai will be closed overnight following two landslides this morning.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation Kauai District was notified of the first landslide at approximately 6 a.m. this morning, and have been working alongside Kauai County Department of Public Works crews to clear the highway. During the cleanup, a second landslide occurred in the same location, further blocking the route and extending the closure to between mile markers 6 and 5.

An emergency access route was cleared this afternoon by crews to allow emergency vehicles to access communities on the other side of the landslide.

An estimate for reopening the highway will be provided after a Saturday morning survey.

Updates on the status of Kuhio Highway will be posted to HDOT’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.
