Police identify Kailua-Kona man killed in traffic accident
Hawaii Police Department has opened a negligent homicide case following the death of a Kailua-Kona pedestrian, who was hit by a car on Thursday.
Police said 50-year-old Peter Sigrah of Kailua-Kona died from injuries Thursday morning after being hit by a car traveling traveling south on Queen Kaahumanu Highway at the intersection with Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park.
Police responded to a report of a crash at 5:50 a.m. and determined that Sigrah was walking in the southbound lane when he was hit by a 64-year-old Kamuela man, who was driving a 2006 Ford F-450. Sigrah was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10 a.m.
Police believe that speed and alcohol were not a factor, but the incident is still under investigation. Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are asking potential witnesses to call Officer Kimo Keliipaakaua at (808) 326-4646, ext. 229.
Police said the accident was the fifth traffic fatality this year. At this time, last year, police had counted four traffic fatalities.
