Michael Tsai

A 72-year-old man died early today after he was struck by a van while attempting to cross Fort Weaver Road.

According to an Emergency Medical Services report, the man was running from The Queen’s Medical Center West toward a bus stop when he was struck about 1:30 a.m..

Police said the man was not in a crosswalk. He was hit by a van traveling north on Fort Weaver Road operated by a 61-year-old man.

The pedestrian was transported in critical condition to an area hospital, where he later died.

Police said speed and alcohol were not factors in the incident.

This was the 11th traffic-related fatality of the year on Oahu, compared to six at the same time last year.
