Discount retailer Ross Stores Inc. is becoming more ubiquitous throughout the islands.
The California chain, known for off-price name brands and designer clothes, shoes and home products, is opening later this year as an anchor tenant in Windward Mall.
The 26,657-square-foot store will occupy the space of the former Sports Authority, which closed all eight Hawaii stores in 2016 after filing bankruptcy.
Ross operates 205 stores across the country, including 19 locations in Hawaii. It has another Kaneohe store nearby at the Windward City Shopping Center, which will remain open.
“Discount apparel has been one of the stronger retail categories out there. You have Ross and
T.J. Maxx appealing to those that want to get good value,” said Mike Hamasu, director of consulting and research at Colliers International, which represents the retailer. “What you’re seeing is the impact of Amazon and e-commerce on big-box retailers as well as department stores like Sears, J.C. Penney and Macy’s. The positive for Ross is they’re offering these designer apparel goods at discounts that are fairly comparable to what can be purchased on Amazon. With Ross you can actually try on the clothing, and it’s at a good price.”
In addition to Ross, the shopping center, anchored by Sears, Macy’s and Regal Cinemas, announced that women’s clothing boutique In My Closet will open this summer as it upgrades the mall with new floors and seating areas.
