Carter Hirano might turn this penchant for clutching up into a useful hobby.
The Pearl City first baseman came up with a two-run double to left in the top of the 12th inning, lifting unranked Pearl City over No. 4 Campbell 3-1 in a pitchers’ duel at the Sabers field on a sunny, breezy afternoon.
“We had too many squandered opportunities,” Sabers coach Rory Pico said. “We’ve just got to practice swinging in these situations. We’ve got to clutch up. These things happen. It’s still early.”
Campbell lost a regular season game for the first time since March 30, 2016 — an 8-2 loss to Pearl City — snapping an 18-game winning streak in league.
For Pearl City, it’s a bounce-back win after a home loss to Mililani over the weekend.
“I feel good for the kids. I’m proud for them,” Chargers’ first-year coach Wes Yonamine said. “We just kept battling.”
With the game tied at 1, the 12th inning began with Campbell’s third pitcher, Zach Palipti, on the mound. Palipti, who started at second base, struck out Shawn Iwane and got Sam Prentice to ground out, but Alika Almaraz reached base on a fielding error by third baseman Rory Escuadro. After Christian Pacrem walked on four pitches, Hirano stepped to the plate and Campbell made a pitching change, bringing Dayton Robinson into the game.
Hirano was 0-for-3 until reaching base on a swinging bunt in the 10th. This time, the count was 0-1 when he timed the next pitch just right and slapped it down the left-field line. Both baserunners scored on the hit.
“I was looking for off-speed. The first pitch was a fastball,” said Hirano, who had never faced Robinson before.
The Chargers’ third pitcher, Jensen Shigeta, came on in the bottom of the 12th and survived to get the win. Palipti took the loss for Campbell despite not giving up an earned run.
Pearl City improved to 2-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West. Campbell dropped to 2-1 despite a stellar effort by starting pitcher Jamin Kalaola. The senior allowed one run and three hits through seven innings with three strikeouts and no walks. His counterpart, Cade Halemanu, struggled early, but finished strong in his six innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits.
Almarez took Halemanu’s place and delivered five shutout innings, permitting one hit, striking out five and walking five.
“It was a great game. Kalaola pitched well. Our starter (Halemanu) walked the first batter, then he threw strikes,” Yonamine said. “Then Alika kept rolling on.”
Kalaola, coming off a two-hit shutout of Mililani last week, retired the first 11 batters he faced. Campbell got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first thanks to a Pearl City error. Nicholas Sampson doubled with one out, and with two outs, Kalaola walked. Shortstop Matt Aribal then misfired on a grounder by Roy Clemons-Diaz, allowing Sampson to score easily.
In the top of the fourth, Kalaola retired the first two batters, getting a nice play at third base by Escuadro. Prentice then doubled down the left-field line, and Halemanu followed with a double to left-center to score Prentice and tie the game at 1.
The visitors didn’t get another runner in scoring position against Kalaola. Meanwhile, Halemanu found his rhythm and set the Sabers down in order in the fifth and six innings.
Almarez entered in the bottom of the seventh and Campbell had two runners on base via walks, but Kalaola popped out to first, ending the threat.
Ayzek Silva, a crafty southpaw, took the mound for Campbell and delivered four innings, two hits, two strikeouts and no walks. Campbell couldn’t capitalize against Almarez, who pitched from the stretch and seemed at his best with runners on base.
In the bottom of the ninth, Charles Monell singled with one out and Ikaika Ganancial reached on a throwing error by third baseman Jensen Kaya, giving the Sabers runners at second and third. Alvarez got Sampson to pop out and, after intentionally walking Dylan Ramon, got Shayden Sabangan to ground into a fielder’s choice at third to end the inning.
The top of the 10th was a prime opportunity for the Chargers, who benefited from a fielding error by Palipti, who was at second base at the time. With runners at the corners and one out, Silva got Alihi Rodrigues to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.
In the bottom of the 11th, Monell walked and stole second base with one out. Alvarez then got Ganancial to fly out and struck out Sampson to stifle the Sabers again.
After Pearl City took the lead in the 12th, Campbell got a leadoff walk by Dyland Ramon against Shigeta. After Shayden Sabangan grounded into a forceout at second, Clemons-Diaz popped out, and then Isaacs-Costa Ansley grounded to first, ending the game.
