No. 2 UH sweeps No. 11 Penn State

Junior hitter Stijn van Tilburg had a team-high nine kills to lead No. 2 Hawaii to a 25-16, 25-19, 25-16 sweep of No. 11 Penn State in tonight’s second match of the 24th Outrigger Resorts Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Warriors (13-2, 2-0) will go for their third straight Outrigger championship when facing No. 4 Brigham Young at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Cougars (16-4, 2-0 ORI) turned back No. 8 Lewis in today’s first match, 25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 26-24.

The Flyers (13-7, 0-2) meet the Nittany Lions (10-6, 0-2) in the de facto third-place match Saturday at 4 p.m.

Calvin Mende led Penn State with 10 kills. The Nittany Lions came into the match hitting .308; they finished .089 tonight.

UH sophomore hitter Austin Matautia added eight kills and had three of the Warriors’ six aces, including the match-ender.
