The National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association will honor Stephen Tsai as the 2017 Sportswriter of the Year in Hawaii.
Tsai, who covers University of Hawaii football and baseball as well as composing a popular daily blog, won the award for the fifth time. Only Star-Advertiser columnist Ferd Lewis has won as many. Former Star-Bulletin reporter Dick Couch is next with three.
Tsai also won the award in 1991, 1996, 2009 and 2011, the first three with The Honolulu Advertiser.
Tsai, 57, was born in New York and is a graduate of Roosevelt High (1978) and the University of Hawaii (1983). He began his career with the local dailies in 1981.
The Star-Advertiser’s Brian McInnis was the recipient of the award last year.
Kanoa Leahey, play-by-play announcer for Spectrum Sports, earned the Sportscaster of the Year award from the organization, the first time he has won it.
Leahey’s father, Jim, has won the award 17 times, the last time was in 1991.
