Hawaii’s Morgan Martin and Lea Monkhouse were named the Big West beach volleyball pairs team of the week after going 5-1 against six ranked squads — including wins over two top-10 teams — last week.
Martin and Monkhouse, who have the team’s top record of 8-2, are the first UH duo to earn the honor this season.
Playing at the No 3. flight, the pair helped the Rainbow Wahine go 4-2 on their first road trip of the year. Martin and Monkhouse, both sophomores, were the only SandBows duo to go undefeated last Thursday, picking up Hawaii’s lone win in the 4-1 loss to UCLA and clinching the 3-2 win over Loyola Marymount.
In the East Meets West Challenge at Manhattan Beach, Calif., the duo went 3-1 with wins over LSU, Florida International and TCU. Their only loss was to Florida State as the Seminoles defeated Hawaii 4-1.
The SandBows next host the Outrigger Resorts Hawaii Invitational at Queen’s Beach on Saturday and Sunday. The field includes No. 3 USC, No. 12 Grand Canyon and unranked Nebraska.
