Maryland rallied for five runs in the sixth inning then held off Hawaii’s comeback attempt to send the Rainbow Wahine softball team to a 7-6 loss on Sunday to close the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
UH sophomore Callee Heen hit her 10th home run of the season and the Wahine (16-13) built a 5-2 lead after four innings. But the Terrapins (10-19) strung together four hits with two out in the top of the fifth to jump ahead 7-5 and chase UH starter Dana Thomsen (9-9). Baldwin graduate Skylynne Ellazar doubled and scored a run in the Maryland outburst.
The Wahine closed to within a run on Nicole Lopez’s RBI double in the sixth inning and put two runners on base with two out in the seventh. But Maryland reliever Sydney Golden (4-10) escaped with a fielder’s choice grounder to end the game.
After closing a 17-game homestand, the Wahine have a week off before opening Big West play March 30 at Long Beach State.
