Regal Bakery recognized by Salvation Army for donations

Good deeds are reflected in many ways and one of those is doughnuts.

For example, Regal Bakery has donated more than 5,000 of its colorful specialty doughnuts over four years to the Salvation Army’s National Donut Day.

In appreciation, the Salvation Army Hawaiian & Pacific Islands Division is honoring Regal as a 2018 Army of Hope Award recipient. The bakery will be recognized at a gala April 28, along with City Mill and the developer D.R. Horton Hawaii, for their contributions to Salvation Army projects.

The event runs 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Salvation Army’s Family Treatment Services facility, 845 22nd Ave. in Kaimuki.

The food will be prepared by some top Oahu restaurants: Chef Chai, the Halekulani, Hy’s Steak House, Il Gelato Cafe, MW Restaurant, Senia, The Pig & the Lady and 3660 on the Rise, as well as Touch a Heart, a culinary training program that produces baked goods.

Funds raised will support the Pathway of Hope initiative that helps individuals facing poverty, homelessness and drug addiction find housing and jobs.

NEW WHOLE FOODS OPENS MAY 9

Whole Foods Market’s new Ward Village store will open on May 9, with 5 percent of the day’s net sales going to MA‘O Organic Farms in Waianae.

The 72,000-square foot, two-story Queen Street location will be the Austin-based retailer’s fourth in Hawaii and its largest, with 300 employees. It will anchor the Ae‘o high-rise condominium behind Consolidated Theatres Ward 16.

This location will feature From Block to Bowl, a selection of fish from the nearby Honolulu Fish Auction, a bar with 24 beers on tap (including some exclusive Waikiki Brewing Co. brews) and a Lanikai Juice bar.

Other local businesses to be featured include La Tour Cafe, with banh mi sandwiches; and Juicy Brew, with luau stew, kalo salad and ulu chowder.

DINNER SALUTES TASTE OF GINGER

Chefs Sam Choy joins Koloa Landing Resort chef Shaun Hinson in a dinner showcasing the bright flavor of ginger, 6 p.m. Friday at the resort.

“The Choy of Cooking — Ginger on the Lawn” will feature Barrow’s Intense Ginger Liqueur and Steelgrass Farm on a menu that focuses on ingredients grown, caught and produced on Kauai.

Pick up tips for making portable meals at Adventist Health Castle’s April cooking demonstration, “Easy and Nutritious Grab and Go Meals,” 6 to 7:15 p.m. April 26 at Castle’s Wellness Auditorium.

Madeline Kammerer of Down to Earth will cover the efficient preparation of vegetarian meals using budget-friendly ingredients such as chickpeas and brown rice.
