Cal State Northridge spoiled senior day for the University of Hawaii softball team by sweeping Saturday’s Big West doubleheader at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
CSUN right-hander Taylor Troost held UH (22-25, 6-12 Big West) to four singles, shortstop Savannah Horvath hit a two-run home run and the Matadors (22-34, 7-11) won the opener 3-0. UH freshman Dominique Martinez gave up 12 hits over 41⁄3 innings in the loss.
The Rainbow Wahine took a 3-1 lead in the third inning of their home finale with the aid of two bases-loaded walks. CSUN tied the game on Raquel Jaime’s two-run single in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth on Megan Stevens’ two-run homer. Jessica Alexander added a grand slam in the seventh off of UH senior Dana Thomsen (14-15) and the Matadors earned the series win with the 10-4 victory.
The Wahine close the season with a three-game series at UC Davis starting Friday.
UH Hilo sweeps Chaminade in softball
The Hawaii Hilo softball team swept a doubleheader from Chaminade on Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
In the first game, Leah Gonzales pitched a four-hitter and Mari Kawano and Bailey Gaspar drove in two runs apiece in the Vulcans’ 7-1 victory. Ashlyn Yagin went 2-for-3 for the Silverswords.
In the second game, Cyanne Fernandez pitched a six-hitter and Gaspar batted 3-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBIs in Hilo’s 10-3 win. Kiarra Lincoln went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs for the Vulcans (31-16, 19-9 PacWest). Kiana Ulufale batted 3-for-3 for the Silverswords (10-33, 6-25).
It was the regular-season finale for both teams.
UH’s Abbott fifth in Big West heptathlon
University of Hawaii sophomore Calli-Ann Abbott finished fifth in the heptathlon at the Big West Multi-Events Championships on Saturday in Northridge, Calif.
Abbott, of Powell River, British Columbia, Canada, scored 1,877 points Saturday to increase her total to 4,844.
Abbott set personal bests in the high jump (4-11.75 feet), 200 meters (5.77) and javelin (128-4).
