Hokule‘a repairs to be completed before Maunalua Bay arrival

  • CRAIG T. KOJIMA / CKOJIMA@STARADVERTISER.COM

A damaged Hokule‘a arrives at Sand Island on May 2.

Repairs to the Hokule‘a’s damaged hull are going well, and should be completed by Friday, just in time for the canoe’s scheduled evening arrival at Maunalua Bay on Oahu, according to the Polynesian Voyaging Society.

The Hokule‘a made an emergency trip back to Oahu from the Big Island due to hull damages sustained while en route to Kawaihae Harbor during its “Mahalo, Hawaii Sail” tour.

Following nine days of drydock at the Society’s Marine and Education Center headquarters at Sand Island, Hokule‘a is expected to depart for an almost two-week community engagement at Hawaii Kai Towne Center.

Weather permitting, the canoe is expected to arrive at Maunalua Bay Friday evening, then dock at the center early Saturday morning, where crew members will host scheduled school visits. Hokule‘a will also be available for dockside tours through May 24.

During the stop, Hokule‘a and crew also will participate in the Maunalua Heritage Festival, which kicks off on Saturday.

The Hokuleʻa also will return to Hawaii island later this year to reschedule school and community tours that were postponed due to the canoe’s damages.

Dockside tours at Hawaii Kai Town Center are free and open to the public from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, and 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Hokule‘a talk story presentations are also scheduled for next week.
