Left-hander Ayzek Silva tossed a three-hit shutout to lead Campbell to a 3-0 win over Kamehameha-Maui in the first game of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA State Baseball Championships on Tuesday at Les Murakami Stadium.
Silva struck out two and walked only one in a 78-pitch effort. He didn’t have a three-ball count until walking his only batter with two outs in the fifth inning and managed to finish the complete game before reaching the 85-pitch limit that would have kept him out of the rest of the tournament.
“The game plan was to attack and pound the zone and we feel (Silva’s) movement can get guys out even if he misses his spots,” Campbell coach Rory Pico said. “Not to be too fine, but just pound the zone and let the defense work and he did those things today.”
The Sabers improved to 6-0 in their opening game of the tournament over the past six years.
The game was delayed 30 minutes because the University of Hawaii baseball team decided to hold a practice Tuesday morning with fewer than 10 players.
Silva allowed only one runner to reach second base in his team’s first game since April 21, a win over Pearl City for OIA third place.
“We kind of had to grind on our own. Not having games is different from playing every week,” Silva said. “I was just going after them and letting them hit the ball and trusting my defense.”
Shayden Sabangan scored on Ikaika Ganancial’s two-out single in the bottom of the second inning and tripled and scored on Dylan Ramon’s sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
Campbell scored its first run in the first inning with three straight two-out singles.
