Honolulu Fire Department investigators determined a fire at the Ka­pahulu Safeway last month was intentionally set, and have handed over the case to police for further investigation.

At about 4:30 a.m. April 29, firefighters responded to a two-alarm structure fire at 888 Kapahulu Ave. with 10 units staffed by 39 HFD personnel. The first unit to arrive found smoke coming out of Safeway’s main entrance. Eleven employees and three customers were reported to have evacuated the building prior to their arrival.

The fire was brought under control at 5:15 a.m. and fully extinguished by 5:40 a.m.

The department said a working, automatic fire sprinkler system reduced the intensity and spread of the fire.

Damage is estimated at $100,000 to the structure and $500,000 to its contents. No injuries were reported.

Security guard dies after golf cart crash in Aiea

A 76-year-old security guard died after he fell out of a golf cart at Harbor Center in Aiea when the motorized vehicle struck a building.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s identified the guard as William F. Aberilla of Kaneohe. An official cause of death is pending.

Police said a man later identified as Aberilla was sitting in a parked golf cart at the center, 98-025 Hekaha St., at about 8:20 a.m. Monday when he depressed the cart’s brake.

The motorized vehicle traveled forward and struck a building. Police said Aberilla fell off the cart upon impact and struck his head on concrete.

Emergency Medical Services treated and transported him in critical condition to a hospital, where he died Wednesday.

Police said there are no signs of foul play.
