Honolulu Fire Department investigators determined a fire at the Kapahulu Safeway last month was intentionally set, and have handed over the case to police for further investigation.
At about 4:30 a.m. April 29, firefighters responded to a two-alarm structure fire at 888 Kapahulu Ave. with 10 units staffed by 39 HFD personnel. The first unit to arrive found smoke coming out of Safeway’s main entrance. Eleven employees and three customers were reported to have evacuated the building prior to their arrival.
The fire was brought under control at 5:15 a.m. and fully extinguished by 5:40 a.m.
The department said a working, automatic fire sprinkler system reduced the intensity and spread of the fire.
Damage is estimated at $100,000 to the structure and $500,000 to its contents. No injuries were reported.
