Hawaii sophomore Callee Heen’s grand slam highlighted the Rainbow Wahine softball team’s 6-0 win over UC Davis in the opening game of a Big West series Friday in Davis, Calif.
UH right-hander Dana Thomsen (15-15) tied her season high with nine strikeouts, held UC Davis to four hits and walked none in the sixth shutout of her senior season.
UH first baseman Rachael Turner opened the scoring with an RBI single with the bases loaded in the top of the third. Heen followed with her 14th homer of the season to give UH a 5-0 lead. UH center fielder Danielle Garcielita went 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot and scored the final run on Turner’s sacrifice fly in the seventh.
UH (23-25, 7-12 Big West) closes the season today with a doubleheader with the Aggies (25-25, 7-13) starting at 9 a.m.
Rosenmeier, Cowell advance to finals
Hawaii’s Brett Rosenmeier and Colton Cowell will play for the title of the USAV Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship today after advancing with Friday’s semifinal win at Hermosa Beach, Calif.
Rosenmeier-Cowell swept Quincy’s Collin Merk-Anthony Winter 21-18, 21-16 in a rematch of Thursday’s Pool B opener won by the Rainbow Warriors 2-1. The second-seeded Rosenmeier-Cowell, who finished fourth in this event last year, will face fourth-seeded Florida State’s Jon Justine-Adam Wienckowski today at 8:20 a.m.
Rosenmeier-Cowell defeated Justine-Wienckowski in Thursday’s second pool-play match 2-1.
Today’s winner will represent the U.S. at the 2018 FISU World University Championship in Macau next August.
Vulcans ink 3 local volleyball products
The University of Hawaii Hilo has signed three players with local ties in volleyball for the upcoming 2018 season.
Jorene Ulu (Waianae), Melina Devela (Waiakea) and Tesi Tuioti (California High) all commited to play for coach Gene Krieger next season.
Ulu, a 5-foot-7 setter, led Waianae to the 2016 HHSAA Division II title as a junior, and was a third-team All-State selection this year.
Devela, a 6-1 middle blocker, was a All-BIIF first team selection this year, and led Waiakea to a state tournament berth.
Tuioti is a native of Laie, but played for California High in San Ramon, Calif., this past season. The 5-10 outside hitter is the daughter of former Hawaii assistant football coach Tony Tuioti and former Rainbow Wahine volleyball player Keala Nihipali.
