Police said a 21-year-old Wahiawa man is in “extremely critical condition” after he was involved in a single-vehicle crash in Waialua Sunday.

The man was traveling west on Kaukonahua Road near Hukilau Loop in a 2008 Nissan at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle at about 6:55 p.m.

Police said the vehicle slid sideways into the eastbound lane and struck a utility pole. The vehicle then went down an embankment before it came to a final rest.

Emergency Medical Services performed advanced life-saving treatment and transported him to a trauma center in extremely critical condition.

His 24-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene.

Police said speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
